Countdown to the World Cup

It’s June today and that means we are officially in World Cup month. Only 10 days to go until the matches start, with England due to kick off their campaign on the 12th June against the USA.

With many of the matches being played in the afternoon a lot of people are going to be stuck at work and unable to watch them by conventional means. However SmartPhone owners could watch live matches streamed to their phones. Beware of data costs though, a single match could use 400MB of data.

If you can’t/don’t want to watch llive, there will be a multitude of ways to find out World Cup news, latest scores, text commentaries etc. You could keep in touch via Facebook and Twittter and a host of other social networking sites.

Mobile phone networks are concerned that this huge increase in traffic could cause problems with their network coverage. A likely peak is England’s final game against Slovenia on 23rd June at 3pm. This game could be crucial to England’s chances of progression and therefore the most watched of the group stages.

For those lucky enough to be going to South Africa beware the cost of roaming. South Africa is amongst the highest band for call charges and data roaming so make sure you contact your mobile phone provider to arrange for a special package.before you go.

Don’t end up with a bill for several hundred/thousands of pounds, as has been reported with other data roaming customers who have not realised just how expensive using their phone overseas can be.

So good luck to England in the World Cup, let’s all hope we wake up on the 12th July as world champions of football!
